Con un fondo rosa, floreado y luminoso, Tyler —una lolita estadounidense— le da completa libertad a su lengua cada semana en Youtube. Sin dar un paso fuera de ese mismo escenario, en el que suele hablar de noticias relacionadas al Lolita, logró reabrir un conocido problema de la comunidad: Las acusaciones de acoso sobre Anime Matsuri.
En la edición del 10 de diciembre de Last Week Lolita News—noticiero lolita en YouTube, de corte humorístico y satírico—, Scarfing Scarves (Tyler) publicó un video dedicado a Cathy Cat y su relación con Shop in Wonderland, titulado "Cathy Cat Catastrophe", el cual recordaba los hechos tras la figura de John Leigh, uno de los dueños de dicha tienda y Director de Anime Matsuri, una gran convención de anime de Estados Unidos.
En la edición del 10 de diciembre de Last Week Lolita News—noticiero lolita en YouTube, de corte humorístico y satírico—, Scarfing Scarves (Tyler) publicó un video dedicado a Cathy Cat y su relación con Shop in Wonderland, titulado "Cathy Cat Catastrophe", el cual recordaba los hechos tras la figura de John Leigh, uno de los dueños de dicha tienda y Director de Anime Matsuri, una gran convención de anime de Estados Unidos.
En 2015 salieron a la luz acusaciones y testimonios sobre acoso sexual que inculpaban a John Leigh, las que motivaron a miembros de la comunidad lolita estadounidense a solicitar que JLA revocara de sus puestos de embajadores lolita honorarios a John y su esposa Deneice Leigh. Como resultado, ambos renunciaron a su cargo, y John escribió en su blog su versión de la historia, en un texto titulado "Un hombre en un mundo de mujeres" ("A man in a woman’s world"), para luego publicar un certificado de finalización de un curso sobre acoso sexual.
Lejos de calmar con ello a la comunidad Lolita internacional, los testimonios de las víctimas y el tibio desenlace de los hechos continuaron en su memoria, y su molestia revivió tras las fotografías de Cathy Cat modelando para la tienda de Leigh. Entre estas reacciones, apareció la de Tyler.
-¿Por qué decidiste hablar de los problemas con Anime Matsuri?
La razón inicial para abordar este problema surgió del alboroto en la comunidad por la colaboración entre Cathy Cat y Shop In Wonderland. Divulgando el historial de acoso sexual de Anime Matsuri / John Leigh se proporcionó un contexto sobre por qué las personas estaban molestas.
-Tu personaje siempre ha sido duro y sarcástico, humorístico. Pero últimamente tomaste un tono mucho más serio sobre el problema del acoso sexual. ¿Por qué?
Si bien mis videos caen bajo la parodia por naturaleza, hay cuestiones que realmente me importan, y el medio del humor me permite abordar el contenido inquietante de una manera que es mucho más aceptable. Por todas las cosas que dije/diré en el futuro, este estilo y su comunidad son importantes para mí, y las cosas que la amenazan son algo que no tomo a la ligera.

El recordatorio de Tyler no demoró en generar reacciones, tanto de apoyo por gran parte de la comunidad Lolita internacional, como de molestia desde las partes involucradas, las que se manifestaron en dos strikes por copyright solicitados por Ask Japanese contra su canal de Youtube.
-¿Alguna vez pensaste que esto escalaría así cuando hiciste el primer video sobre Cathy Cat?
-¿Cómo crees que esto puede ayudar en la batalla contra los Leigh?
Si con "esto" te refieres a los videos, entonces diría que no soy más que una pequeña voz en un mar de gente que ha estado gritando desde lo más alto de sus pulmones durante años. Los videos han cubierto la repavimentación de este tema, pero es la voz abrumadora de la comunidad la que realmente ha ayudado en esta lucha. Los videos son solo un subproducto de esa alerta roja.
Los intentos de silenciar a Tyler no finalizaron ahí, traspasando los límites de Youtube para derivar en una carta de cese y desistimiento enviada por el abogado de los Leighs a la youtuber. En esta se le solicitaba eliminar los videos relacionados con Anime Matsuri, Shop in Wonderland, sus dueños, Cathy Cat y Ask Japanese; y además exigía disculpas públicas en sus redes sociales.
-¿Qué pensaste cuando llegó la carta de cese y desista?
"¿Qué?" Seguido por: "Ok". Seguido por: "¿QUÉ?"
-¿Sabes cómo proceder ahora en términos legales?
Siento que tengo una comprensión decente de a dónde voy con esto, sin duda.
Cada actualización en la fanpage de Facebook de Scarfing Scarves ha estado acompañada de mensajes de apoyo para Tyler, dejando en claro una posición mayoritaria de las y los miembros de la comunidad ante los contextos que involucran acoso.
- ¿Esperabas tanto apoyo de la comunidad Lolita?
Ni en un millón de años. Esta ha sido una especie de montaña rusa de una dimensión alternativa para mí. Nunca espero que esta comunidad se una en la manera en que lo hicieron. No por una youtuber sin nombre con un hacha para luchar contra temas perfectamente inocuos.

De momento, YouTube resolvió ambas reclamaciones por copyright en favor de Scarfing Scarves, dejando su canal libre de strikes. Mientras que Tyler ha dejado en claro que esto no es sobre ella, sino que sobre las víctimas, y sobre no callar ante las denuncias de acoso sexual.
-¿Cuál sería el mejor resultado de esto en tu opinión?

De acuerdo, este es un sueño febril, pero el mejor resultado sería que las cabezas de Anime Matsuri tuvieran una visión profunda de sus acciones, se disculparan profusamente con todas las personas afectadas y nunca más crucen las puertas de esta comunidad. With a pink, flowered and luminous background, Tyler —an American lolita— lets her tongue running free every week on YouTube. Without taking a step outside of that scenario, were she usually speaks about news related to Lolita Fashion, she managed to relive a community problem: The accusations of harassment on Anime Matsuri.
In the December 10 edition of Last Week Lolita News on YouTube, Scarfing Scarves (Tyler) published a video dedicated to Cathy Cat and her relationship with Shop in Wonderland, entitled "Cathy Cat Catastrophe", which recalled the facts surrounding the figure of John Leigh, one of the owners of that store and Director of Anime Matsuri, a big anime convention of the United States.
In 2015, allegations and testimonies about sexual harassment that blamed John Leigh came to light, prompting members of the American lolita community to request that JLA revoke the Kawaii Ambassador titles from John and his wife Deneice Leigh. As a result, both resigned their titles, and John wrote on his blog his version of the story, in a text entitled "A man in a woman's world", and then published a certificate of completion of a course about sexual harassment.
Far from calming the international Lolita community, the testimonies of the victims and the lukewarm outcome of the events continued in their memory, and their anger revived after the pictures of Cathy Cat modeling for Leigh's shop. Between these reactions, appeared Tyler's.
-Why did you decide to talk about the problems about Anime Matsuri?
The initial reason for addressing this issue rose out of the uproar in the community over the collaboration between Cathy Cat and Shop In Wonderland. Divulging Anime Matsuri/John Leigh's history of sexual harassment was provided for context as to why people were upset.
-Your character has always been harsh and sarcastic, humoristic. But lately you took a much more serious tone about the problem of sexual harassment. Why was it?
While my videos do fall under parody in nature, there are issues that I do truly care about, and the medium of humor allows me to address otherwise disturbing content in a way that's a lot more palatable. For all the things I have said/will say in the future, this fashion and its community is important to me, and the things that threaten it are something I don't take lightly.

Tyler's reminder did not take long to generate two reactions: support for much of the international Lolita community, and annoyance from the parties involved, expressed in two copyright strikes requested by Ask Japanese against her YouTube channel.
-Did you ever think that it would scale like this when you made the first video about Cathy Cat?
As much as I might like to think that people would sit through my overly verbose endurance tests in large numbers for fun, no, I never imagined that this would become what it has.
-How do you think this can help in the battle against the Leighs?
If by "this" you mean the videos, then I would say that I am but one small voice in a sea of people that have been screaming this from the top of their lungs for years. The videos have covered the resurfacing of this issue, but it is the overwhelming voice of the community that has truly helped in this fight. The videos are just a byproduct of that red alert.
The attempts to silence Tyler did not end there, transcending the limits of YouTube to derive into a letter of cease and desist sent by Leigh's lawyer to the youtuber. In the letter it was requested to eliminate the videos related to Anime Matsuri, Shop in Wonderland, its owners, Cathy Cat and Ask Japanese; and also demanded public apologies in her social media.
-What did you think when the cease and desist letter arrived?
"What?" Followed by: "Ok." Followed by: "WHAT?
-Do you know how to proceed now in legal terms?
I feel I have a decent understanding of where I'm going with this, certainly.
Each update on the Scarfing Scarves Fanpage has been accompanied by support messages to Tyler, making clear a majority position of the members of the community in contexts that involves harassment.
-Did you expect so many support from the Lolita community?
Not in a million years. This has been some kind of roller coaster ride from an alternate dimension for me. I never expect this community to rally the way they have. Not for some no-name youtuber with an axe to grind against perfectly innocuous subjects.

At the moment, YouTube settled both copyright claims in favor of Scarfing Scarves, leaving its channel free of strikes. While Tyler has made it clear that this isn't about her, is about the victims, and about not keeping silent about the allegations of sexual harassment.
-What would it be the best result of this in your opinion?
The best result? Granted this is a fever dream, but the best result would be for the heads of Anime Matsuri to take a deep look at their actions, apologize profusely to everyone they've affected, and never darken the doorstep of this community ever again. That said, the more realistic best result would be for them to drop this fiasco and finally graduate from the Streisand School of Public Relations.
